Gone are the days of slathering your skin in baby oil then lying out in the sun, slowly frying like bacon. Nowadays everyone knows the importance of being sun smart – so you can play all day and enjoy the delicious days of summer. So why does Reef use oils in their products? The answer is simple – our three main oils are specifically chosen to nourish and hydrate your skin, not prepare it for toasting. Read on for the benefits of each of our key oils and the roles they play in capturing summer in a bottle.

Almond oil

You may be shocked to hear this, but almond oil comes from… almonds! As one of the oldest types of plant that humans have farmed, it’s no wonder that people have been using almond oil for a long time! Almond trees are native to South-Central Asia but have spread all over the world, from the USA to the Mediterranean to Australia.
These days almond oil is extracted from the nuts using heat or chemicals, before being refined ready for use.

Almond oil benefits

Traditionally, almond oil has been used to maintain skin elasticity, manage dry skin associated with eczema-prone skin and in hair care. Other benefits include:
● Smoothing the skin
● Supplying water to the skin and holding it there for a boost of hydration
● Fast absorption (your skin just drinks it right up!)
● Controlling stretch marks (when massaged into the skin)
● Effects on skin aging – to keep that summer glow going!

Sesame oil

You know the magic words to open any door – “Open sesame!”, well sesame oil comes from a plant whose official latin name also sounds like magic words – Sesamum indicum. Sesame oil has been used for around 6000 years. Almost all of the sesame seeds in the world get turned into sesame oil, so it’s got to be good right?

Sesame oil benefits

Sesame oil is known for antioxidant properties – meaning it can help fight off free radicals that are linked to skin ageing. In addition to this superpower, sesame oil has other benefits such as:
● Soothing hydration – keeping your skin calm so you can carry on
● Softening and hydrating your skin thanks to fatty acids
● Doesn’t block your pores, meaning it’s a good option for all different types of skin

Coconut oil

We’ve saved our heavy lifter for last. Did you know that the coconut tree is considered the “tree of life” because each part of the tree can be used in some way? Well now you do!
Coconut oil is extracted from the meat of the coconut – the delicious white part, and contains many types of fatty acids that give coconut oil its superhero-like abilities. You may be familiar with coconut oil in the kitchen, but is coconut oil good for your skin?

Coconut oil benefits

Not only is coconut the very scent of summer, coconut oil performs many duties in taking care of your skin, including:
● Helping the skin barrier so nasties can’t get in
● Soothing hydration to keep your skin calm and collected
● Antioxidant properties to counter those free radicals
● Super hydrating for that dewy summer glow

Another ingredient we use

Mica – a natural mineral that adds shimmer and sparkle when added to products such as Reef Coconut Shimmer Sun Tan Oil. This ingredient helps you get your glow on so you can dazzle during those glorious summer days and long summer nights.

Ingredients we don’t use

In accordance with the Hawaii Reef Bill passed in 2018, Reef products do not contain oxybenzone or octinoxate. These ingredients have been shown to have an impact on coral and various marine species. Reef takes its name seriously!

When it comes to getting that summer glow, Reef has a range of products specially designed to nourish and hydrate your skin. No more dried out, leathery looks from too much sun, now you can enjoy playing the day away while Reef keeps your skin hydrated and happy.
